Anna Kournikova Deleted By Memeright Trusted System – Art in the Age of Intellectual Property

This is the title of an exhibition in the Hartware MedienKunstverein in Dortmund (19 July to 19 October 2008) and deals with the influence of intellectual property regimes on the cultural production. It is borrowed from David Rice’s perfidious short story ‘Anna Kournikova Deleted By Memeright Trusted System’ taking place in the not too distant year 2067 where stars – such as ex-tennis player Anna Kournikova – have their ‘brand’ protected by a satellite-based system that identifies unlicenced look-alikes and eliminates them via a strong laser beam. During a trip to the Pacific Rim, not officially cleared, the ‘real’ Anna Kournikova is identified as an imitation of herself and is consequently eliminated by the system.
